Following their decision to fire general manager Nico Harrison, the Dallas Mavericks have another huge choice to make. Do they do everything possible to be competitive this season, or does ownership opt to launch a rebuild? Anthony Davis is emerging as a trade candidate amid Harrison's ouster and the team's 3-9 start to the 2025-26 campaign. Though, before he is potentially moved, prospective suitors will want him to answer some of the lingering questions regarding his health.
Well, they are not getting any clarity on Thursday. Davis is once again listed as questionable on the injury report, as Dallas prepares for a Friday night meeting with the incoming Los Angeles Clippers. The four-time All-NBA First-Team selection and three-time All-NBA Defensive First-Teamer has missed the last seven games due to a left calf strain. The squad has only one win in that span, and it came against the 1-11 Washington Wizards, whose lone win came against the Mavs on Oct. 24.
This franchise likely has no chance of making the playoffs unless Davis can play for an extended period of time. Banking on the 32-year-old's durability appears nearly impossible, and it may not be something the Mavericks wish to do any longer.
Moreover, the star big man could always seek a new destination. He forced his way off the New Orleans Pelicans, and based on how things are presently transpiring, questions are bound to arise about his future in Dallas. Anthony Davis has not requested a trade, but his hometown-Chicago Bulls are already being floated as a possible landing spot should a breakup come to fruition.
There are other squads that also may be willing to gamble on a 2020 NBA champion who is only two seasons removed from averaging 24.7 points, 12.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.2 steals and 2.3 blocks. Right now, though, he has to focus on returning to action. Mavericks fans will await the final ruling on Davis' status for the Clippers game.
