Things haven't been going well with the Dallas Mavericks over the last week or so. Ever since the shocking news broke that the Mavericks were trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, things have gone from bad to worse in Dallas. Fans have been protesting, and nobody seems to like the move.
Now, the Mavericks are experiencing some more collateral damage. They have lost a key assistant coach as a part of the fallout from the trade, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.
“Marko Milić has left the Mavericks' coaching staff in the wake of the Luka Dončić trade, sources tell @TheSteinLine,” Stein reported on X. “Milić was the first Slovenian to play in the NBA and, I'm told, did not wish to stay with the Luka-less Mavericks.”
It makes sense that Milić would want to leave the Mavericks as a fellow Slovenian. It will be interesting to see if he ends up reuniting with Doncic in Los Angeles, but he is out of Dallas for now.
The Mavericks played their first game without Doncic on Saturday, getting a 116-105 win over the Houston Rockets in Dallas. Davis had a monster day in his debut, scoring 26 points and adding 16 rebounds and seven assists in 31 minutes. However, he went down with an injury in the second half and did not return to the game.
Davis' injury doesn't appear to be serious, but it is still just one more thing to add onto the Mavericks' misfortune in this situation. On the bright side, Max Christie continued his solid play with the Lakers before the trade with a great Mavericks debut. Christie scored 23 points off the bench in 33 minutes of action and shot 4-for-5 from 3-point range. If Christie can continue shooting the ball well while providing his usual value as an athletic wing on the defensive end, he should be a key piece of the team moving forward.
Hopefully the Mavericks can get Davis back and put the fallout from this deal behind them. During the first half of Saturday's game, Dallas showed that it can still be a very good team even with this version of the roster. If Davis' can get back soon, the Mavericks will have a chance to continue putting that on display.
