Just one day after agreeing to a contract extension with Daniel Gafford, the Dallas Mavericks made their second major move of the offseason in agreeing to a new contract with star point guard Kyrie Irving. Irving opted out of his contract and signed a new deal worth $119 million over the next three seasons. Following the announcement of his new contract with the Mavericks, Kyrie Irving took to social media to give his reaction.

The Mavericks originally acquired Irving in a trade with the Brooklyn Nets during the 2022-23 season. The Mavericks struggled to close that season and ended up missing the playoffs. But the following year, the Mavericks rode the star duo of Irving and Luka Doncic to their first NBA Finals appearance since the 2010-11 season.

This season, the Mavericks struggled to overcome injury issues and the blockbuster trade of Doncic ahead of the trade deadline. Irving suffered a season-ending ACL injury in March. The team was able to make the play-in tournament, but missed the postseason after losing to the Memphis Grizzlies.

In his second full season with the Mavericks, Irving appeared in 50 games at a little over 36 minutes per game as he was named an All-Star for the ninth time in his career. He averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.3 steals with splits of 47.3 percent shooting from the field, 40.1 percent shooting from the three-point line and 91.6 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

During the Mavericks’ Finals run in 2024, Irving averaged 22.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.0 steals with splits of 46.7 percent shooting from the field, 39 percent shooting from the three-point line and 84.9 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

The Mavericks are hoping that next season they will be able to get a bigger sample size of Irving alongside star big man Anthony Davis. They are also expected to add highly-touted incoming rookie Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft.
