Dallas Mavericks point guard Devin Harris could be looking at playing the small forward position after having a logjam situation at the guard spot this season. The 13-year veteran expects to see some time at the small forward position going forward.
The Mavs will have rookie Dennis Smith Jr., G-League wonder Yogi Ferrell, and veteran spark plug J.J. Barea at the point guard position. In addition, Seth Curry, Harris, and P.J. Dozier are slotted at the two-guard.
“You know, point-guard play is tremendous in this league,” Harris explained at the conclusion of last season, according to Earl K. Sneed of Mavs.com. “I’ve played a little two, I’ve played a little one and I’ve played a little three. So, obviously, my position doesn’t change. But having a good point guard just really sets up your team to be successful.”
Harris explained how this roster has morphed over time, slowly taking him out of his initial point guard role.

It felt good to get back out there and be aggressive, play with the young guys and just have fun, and I think that was the main point. (Playing point guard) is something I feel I still can continue to do. But with the team and the structure we have, two and three are more the positions I have to play. I would like to play (at point guard) a little bit more, but we’ll see what happens.”
Worthy to note, Curry is the most likely to start at the shooting guard slot due to his ability to shoot the three efficiently and his familiarity switching back and forth from one to two within a determined set.
Harris is only 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds, making him the shortest rotational small forward since David Wesley (6-foot-1, 203 pounds) lined up at the position for the New Orleans Hornets in 2004 when Harris was first drafted. He would be giving up an average of 35 pounds at the very least against a starting small forward in the league.
