Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic certainly knows how to keep it real, even when it's about his performances.

In an interview with Stephen A. Smith on ESPN, Doncic was asked what his thoughts are on people who have him pegged as an MVP candidate even before the season started. The talented guard gave an honest reply.

“It feels special that a lot of players (and) a lot of people talk about me, but obviously I have a lot of things to improve. I still have a lot of space to improve and I think this season I'm not playing very good.”

Smith was in disbelief at Doncic's response, despite his impressive numbers this season. Doncic explained that the Mavericks are still near the bottom of the Western Conference. In 25 games, the pride of Slovenia has put up averages of 27.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 9.3 assists per contest. These are certainly MVP-caliber numbers.

The Mavericks are on a three-game winning streak, surviving a trio of tightly contested matches, to improve to 12-14. Their latest win on Wednesday against the Hawks saw them escape by the skin of their teeth, 118-117. Doncic had another triple-double of 28 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists while adding two blocks.

As long as the Doncic is around, the Mavericks will always have a shot at winning. The team, however, has to improve on three-point shooting with an NBA-worst 33.8 percent clip. Rebounding has also been an issue with a meager 43.0 average per game.

Luka Doncic can continue his MVP-type campaign when they face the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday.
