It appears that former MVP candidate Isaiah Thomas is inching closer towards his much-awaited debut for the Denver Nuggets.

As reported by The Athletic's Shams Charania, the Nuggets have assigned Thomas to their G League affiliate with the hopes of getting him back to game shape soon:

An earlier report stated that the team was targeting a return for Thomas around the All-Star break, and this recent update seems to be in line with that timetable. To be clear, however, the Nuggets have refused to pinpoint a specific date for Thomas' debut. Nonetheless, a return for the 5-foot-9 point guard sometime in February appears to be a realistic target.

The last time we saw Thomas take the court was on Mar. 22 of last year as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers squad. The Lakers opted against re-signing the 30-year-old to a new deal last summer, which paved the way for a move to Denver. He is currently on a one-year, $2 million deal with the Nuggets, so the team will definitely want to get some return on their investment.

The rise and fall of Thomas has been one of the more bitter narratives in recent times. As the main man of the Boston Celtics, he was selected as an All-Star in two consecutive seasons in 2016 and 2017. In those two years, the feisty guard averaged 25.5 points (on 44.6 percent shooting), 2.8 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and a steal in 33.0 minutes per game.

Unfortunately for him, a lingering hip injury has limited him to just 32 appearances over the past season and a half, between three different teams. Although a bit improbable, we're still hoping that Isaiah Thomas somehow reestablishes himself as one of the most potent scoring guards in the league.
