Denver Nuggets veteran forward Paul Millsap recently expressed his desire to stay on with the team for the long haul.
The 33-year-old recently spoke with Mike Singer of The Denver Post and shared his vision with the Nuggets, as well as his intention to see out his career with the team:
“I could see myself being here long-term, for the rest of my career,” he told The Denver Post. “I can see this organization and this group of guys making a nice play at the championship. I feel like there’s a lot of youth, a lot of growth that can be made and you add that on top of what we’ve done this season with experience and you’ve got yourself a championship-caliber team. Definitely want to be a part of that, but I’ll deal with that when it gets there.”
You can't argue with Millsap here, as the Nuggets definitely have one of the most promising young cores in the NBA today. As a matter of fact, “promising” might not be the right term to describe them right now, with the team already living up to its potential this season.
Millsap understands, however, that at the end of the day, this is a business. The four-time All-Star did not fail to acknowledge a huge stumbling block that might come into play as early as this offseason.
The 6-foot-8 power forward's current deal stipulates that Denver will have a team option to renew his deal for its third and final year next season. This means that while it is highly unlikely, the Nuggets will have an option to opt out of the deal and let Millsap walk away in the summer:
“It’s something that we’ll discuss at the end of the season with management, but I want to do something that fits for everybody,” he said regarding his contract. “We’ll see.”
In two seasons with Denver, Paul Millsap has produced averages of 13.6 points (on 48.3 percent shooting), 6.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.0 blocks in 28.2 minutes per ballgame.
