One of they wrenches in the Golden State Warriors‘ offseason plans was the signing of Andre Iguodala, who garnered more attention and heftier offers than the Warriors expected.
The organization was expected to offer him within $8-to-12 million per year prior to the start of the free agency period, but a tempting offer from the Houston Rockets changed the entire scope of the offseason plans.
The Warriors front office ultimately opened up their wallet and offered him a three-year, $48 million contract, which the 2015 Finals MVP gladly accepted.
A key into making this happen was the recent agreement to a two-year, $53 million deal with forward Kevin Durant, who left a whopping $9.5 million on the table from his potential maximum contract to allow the team to keep their key free agents in-house.

But parallel sources told USA TODAY Sports' Sam Amick that Durant was willing to take an even bigger pay cut if the Warriors were unable to keep Iguodala and had to consider signing free agent small forward Rudy Gay as his replacement.
Gay was scheduled to make $14.26 million during 2017-18 with the Sacramento Kings prior to opting out of his contract, and would likely want a beefy long-term deal to stick around with a team in his early thirties.
Regardless of the outcome, Durant was willing to put Golden State in a situation to succeed, no matter what the free agency had in store for them. Luckily for him, the front office was able to draw out a plan and trace it to completion as Gay comes off a meeting with the L.A. Clippers still searching for his next home.
