After a thrilling Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Monday night between the Toronto Raptors and Golden State Warriors, the NBA’s current landscape was irrevocably changed after superstar Kevin Durant made his return and was promptly pulled after almost 12 minutes of action due to injury. Reports surfaced on Tuesday that the 31-year-old suffered an Achilles’ tendon injury – which casts doubt on, not to be histrionic, the entire future of NBA history.

Despite suffering that injury, there are still five teams that will be ready and willing to offer the superstar a maximum contract an offseason in which Durant was widely expected to opt out of his player option and become a free agent.

Per a story on The Athletic by David Aldridge, “league sources Tuesday made it plain: Durant’s injury, whether short-term or longer, has done little to cool the ardor of his most dogged free agent pursuers. The likelihood remains that all of the New York/L.A. teams will stay in the hunt for Durant beginning on the afternoon of June 30.”

With a constant barrage of takes about Kevin Durant’s willingness or “want” to be back on the court fighting alongside his teammates, KD returned (likely prematurely) from a calf injury that had kept him out for over a month that he suffered against the Houston Rockets in the second round of the Western Conference Playoffs.

Durant looked great early, drilling two early three-pointers and logging 11 points on the way to a +6 in on/off rating. However, Durant would only be able to play those 11 minutes before he suffered a non-contact injury that saw his leg visibly “pop” as he attempted to drive into the lane against Serge Ibaka.

The Warriors will reconvene for Game 6 on Oracle as they try to tie the series, unfortunately without their superstar for good.
