The Golden State Warriors have stood pat so far this offseason, choosing instead to add around the fringes of their roster. Nonetheless, they've been tied to a number of All-Star and big names in free agency – one of which was apparently Chicago Bulls acquisition DeMar DeRozan.
The Warriors were one of a handful of teams vying for DeRozan's services. But of course, that $85 million price tag he ended up being worth wouldn't have fit in so seamlessly into the Dubs' salary cap situation. That doesn't mean Golden State didn't give it a shot

For Golden State, acquiring DeRozan would have necessitated a complicated salary-matching sign-and-trade with the Spurs that would have sent out Kelly Oubre. But that framework never gained much traction, sources said.
Oubre eventually ended up going to the Charlotte Hornets, which no longer needed a sign-and-trade with the Warriors. DeRozan might not have been the best fit alongside Stephen Curry and Co., but he'd have the most space he's ever had to operate as an isolation scorer. But perhaps the Spurs wanted one of the Warriors' young pieces to do it.
Adding the 4-time All-Star on the roster certainly would have been an intriguing get, but will now remain a ‘what-if' for Golden State. Armed with young talent on rookie deals, it remains to be seen if the Warriors make a move when another star becomes available.
