In an interview with FIBA.basketball, New York Knicks star Kristaps Porzingis says he is planning to feature in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 European Qualifiers for his home country of Latvia next summer.

Yes, I'd love to. I had a great time last summer and I want to repeat the experience. I'm looking forward to playing with my teammates again and trying to help Latvia qualify for the World Cup. That's a goal for us and for Latvian basketball, and we all want to give our best to qualify and travel to China to compete on the world stage.

Porzingis starred for Latvia during this past summer’s EuroBasket tournament and led them to all the way to the quarterfinals, where they lost to eventual champions Slovenia.

Porzingis has carried over that fine form over to the NBA, where he’s having a breakout season for the Knicks. He’s averaging 25.5 points on 46.5 percent shooting on the season. However, he has already picked up a handful of injuries just two months into the season.

The Knicks would likely prefer their young star to sit out the summer and rest his body up to avoid further injuries. But if Porzingis wants to go through with his plan to once again represent his country, the Knicks will be hard-pressed to stop him.
