A four-time All-Star, Cousins played last season with the Golden State Warriors, averaging 16.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game after returning from surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon in mid January.
Article Continues BelowThough he showed flashes of the offensive dynamism that propelled him to superstardom and for the most part fit in well with the Warriors' scheme during the regular season, he was marginalized in the playoffs, first by a quad injury suffered in Game 2 of the first round and later by the Toronto Raptors after he returned to action in the NBA Finals. Beset by subpar conditioning, a lack of lift stemming from multiple leg injuries, and the general defensive issues that have long plagued him, Cousins was an outright liability in the Finals save for his impressive performance in Game 2.
When he signed on the cheap with the Warriors last summer, the plan was for Cousins to rehabilitate his value while helping Golden State three-peat. But after the injury that limited him to just eight playoff appearances, he was forced to sign another contract normally reserved for far less accomplished players. Cousins will earn $2.3 million in 2019-20, the veteran's minimum, before returning to the open market this time next year.
Los Angeles' grand plans were foiled when Kawhi Leonard opted to sign with the cross-arena LA Clippers, bringing Paul George along with him. Considering how bare the free-agency cupboard is almost a week into July, the Lakers have done well to build out their roster behind LeBron James and Anthony Davis, even if player fit, like Cousins', isn't ideal.
