Dwight Howard is taking his second chance with the Los Angeles Lakers very seriously.
Through the first seven games of the season, Howard hasn't been a distraction — on or off the court — and is playing high-level defense.
No longer a superstar in the league, Howard is coming off the bench for the Lakers and playing his role to a t. However, the former All-Star says it's his “purpose” and not his “role” to be a force on defense for the Lakers:
“I don’t see it as a role; I see it as my purpose,” Howard said, via Kevin Ding of Lakers.com. “I think it’s my purpose to go out every single night and play hard defense, trying to block every shot, trying to be in the paint, get a lot of steals, go for loose balls. Whatever I can do for this team, be of service, that’s my mission. I don’t see it as my role, I see it as a purpose.”
Howard is averaging 6.7 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.1 blocks for the Lakers in 21.7 minutes per game. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year is shooting 78.6 percent from the field.
With Howard, Anthony Davis and JaVale McGee anchoring the paint for LA, the Lakers are primed to have one of the best defenses in the NBA.
