The jersey that Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James wore at the NBA All-Star Game last month sold for $630,300 at NBA auctions on Thursday, which broke the record for the highest-selling modern NBA jersey, according to Darren Rovell of ESPN.
A total of 231 bids were cast for the uniform.
The money will be donated to the Mamba On Three Fund and the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation in honor of the late Kobe Bryant, who passed away along with his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, in a helicopter crash in January.
James wore the No. 2 at the All-Star Game to pay homage to Gianna, who wore the No. 2 while playing basketball.
The Los Angeles Lakers superstar scored 23 points in what ended up being a 157-153 victory for Team LeBron over Team Giannis.
James signed with the Lakers during the summer of 2018. His first season with the club was an unmitigated disaster, as LeBron battled a legitimately serious injury for the first time in his career and Los Angeles went just 37-45 and missed the playoffs, marking the first time that a James-led club failed to qualify for the postseason since his second year in the league in 2004-05.
However, the Lakers remedied things fairly quickly last June, acquiring superstar big man Anthony Davis in a trade with the New Orleans Pelicans that sent out Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball and Josh Hart. They filled out the roster with capable veterans including Danny Green, Rajon Rondo, Avery Bradley and—improbably—Dwight Howard, in his second stint with the team.
As a result, Los Angeles is 47-13 and sits atop the Western Conference with a little over a month to play before the playoffs begin.
The Lakers will be making the playoffs this season for the first time since the 2012-13 season.
