Not everybody was pleased with LeBron James' first season with the Los Angeles Lakers an anonymous coach expects the “Space Jam 2” star to be “engaged” come the fall.
Despite averaging 27.4 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 8.3 assists per game last season with Los Angeles, James only appeared in 55 contests and the 2018-19 season for the Lakers felt like a lost one as the team was righteously changed at its foundation this summer.
However, there's promise James is more focused next year. Via Keith Smith in RealGM:
Opposing coach on playing the new-look Lakers: “Well, LeBron will be engaged again. We caught them later in the year last season and he was kind of checked out at that point. I bet he has an MVP type of season. I mean, he was better than 90% of the league last year when he didn’t really care. Him and Davis will be a tough cover. They’ve got shooting this year. They can play in the post with (DeMarcus) Cousins. They’ve got some defenders. It’s going to be a good group. I just hope we get them early while they are still figuring things out.”
James, the 34-year-old premier talent in the NBA for the last 16 years, helped coax the Lakers in swinging big and landing All-NBA-caliber power forward Anthony Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans in a trade that sent Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart, and Brandon Ingram, along with multiple picks, to the Bayou. LA also signed Danny Green, DeMarcus Cousins, and Jared Dudley in free agent while re-signing Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Rajon Rondo, and JaVale McGee, too.
LeBron will reportedly move to point guard this upcoming season as well, opening the floor for his teammates to find better shots on the perimeter and for Davis and Cousins to operate down low.
James is a four-time MVP winner, 15-time All-Star, and former scoring champion who's entering the next phase in his career as he tries to contend with the Lakers and a drastically new group of players.
