Following the 2021 NBA Draft, Los Angeles Lakers extended a training camp invite to former Georgetown and Texas Tech guard Mac McClung.

McClung was among the 40+ prospects the Lakers hosted for private workouts over the past month. He participated in the G-League Elite camp in Chicago and worked out for numerous NBA teams.

McClung first gained prominence on the national basketball stage as a high school phenom in Gate City, Virginia, thanks to high-flying viral videos, which defied a certain stereotype.

Aviation aside, McClung was a three-star prospect who signed up to play for Patrick Ewing at Georgetown. In two seasons with the Hoyas, the 6'2 combo guard (except he's really a two-guard) averaged 14.2 PPG. He entered the 2020 NBA Draft before pivoting into the transfer portal.

In his one season in Lubbock, McClung averaged 15.5 points and 2.1 assists in 29 games for the Red Raiders. Overall, he shot 31.3% from three-point range in college, though he set a career-high in 2020-21 (34.3%). His 79.7% free-throw rate in college is a promising sign for his shooting going forward.

In general, McClung will need to show improve his shooting, defense, and play-making for others in order to land a steady gig in the NBA.

Despite trading their first-round pick in the Russell Westbrook blockbuster, the Lakers were able to sign McClung and former Gonzaga Bulldogs wing Joel Ajayi after the draft. McClung will join Ajayi on the Lakers' Summer League squad, which will also include Zavier Simpson, Dakota Mathias, Yoeli Childs, and Vic Law. Their first game is Aug. 8 vs. the Phoenix Suns.

Unfortunately for McClung, should he make the Lakers' roster, I don't think Westbrook is going to let him wear that No. 0.
