The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has shifted the NBA schedule, forcing the 2019-20 season to possibly be played late into the fall.

The NBA season has been suspended since March 11 and while there are no concrete plans as to when or even if the season will resume, Los Angeles Lakers veteran Jared Dudley reports that NBA commissioner Adam Silver told him that if resumed, the season could last until October.

Normally, by early May, the league should have been finishing up with the second round of the playoffs and gearing up for the conference finals which were originally scheduled to begin May 14. The NBA finals scheduled to begin on June 4.

Instead, most teams in the league have roughly 15-20 games left remaining on their regular-season schedule. Recently, Silver spoke with representatives from the NBA Players Association and answered questions regarding the status of the season.

According to Silver, the NBA is still completely focused on trying to get the season back. Silver also discussed the possibility of starting the season without fans and going straight to the playoffs, as well as playing games in isolated locations such as Las Vegas or Orlando.

If the NBA season were to end four months later than usual as Dudley says, significant changes would need to be made to the league's offseason schedule, which could result in a much later start and a subsequent shorter 2020-21 campaign.

As for Jared Dudley, the 34-year-old wing is playing minimal minutes off the bench for a Lakers team that, prior to the league's postponement, held the best record in the Western Conference at 49-14.
