Three years after a late-minute change of heart left the Dallas Mavericks in shambles, DeAndre Jordan is reportedly on the verge of putting ink on paper as the Mavs’ biggest free agent acquisition in recent memory.

Citing sources, Marc Stein of The New York Times said that the Mavericks now have a target on Jordan’s back following the big man’s decision to opt out of the final year of his deal with the L.A. Clippers.

“The Mavericks will make DeAndre Jordan their top target in free agency after Jordan informed the Clippers that he will bypass next season's $24.1 million player option to become a free agent, league sources say”

Jordan’s seemingly inevitable partnership with Dallas is further reinforced by Clippers beat reporter Brad Turner of The Los Angeles Times.

“DeAndre Jordan probably will now sign with the Dallas Mavericks outright.”

Acquiring DeAndre Jordan will definitely put the Mavericks back on the map after finishing last season with a 24-58 record, the franchise’s worst in over 20 years. The Mavs’ frontline was less than inspiring last season with Salah Mejri, Maxi Kleber, and Dwight Powell rotating in the center position.

The Mavericks now also have their backcourt of the future after drafting Dennis Smith Jr. last year and getting European phenom Luka Doncic in a draft-day trade with the Atlanta Hawks last week.

Assuming Jordan eventually finds his way to Dallas, the Mavs are going to be poised to make big steps towards becoming legitimate title contenders again.

Last year, Jordan averaged 12.0 points, 15.2 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks in 77 games with the Clippers.
