The Memphis Grizzlies are third in the Western Conference, and they have a legitimate shot at the second seed being just half a game behind the Golden State Warriors. However, Ja Morant wants everybody to know that's not their target.
Memphis is eyeing the top seed in the Western Conference, and Morant made it a point to emphasize that in his media huddle with reporters on Wednesday.
“We want first place, that's what we're shooting for,” Morant boldly declared.
You just got to love the confidence that Ja Morant has. And to be fair, it is not an impossible task for the Grizzlies to claim the top spot. With 19 games left and a relatively favorable schedule, they are more than capable of stringing wins together to topple the Warriors from second place and the Suns from the top seed.
Of course it is easier said than done. The Suns are actually seven games ahead of the Grizzlies, which means Memphis needs Phoenix to go on a losing streak as well to chase the top seed.

The Warriors' second seed is a more realistic target, especially with the Dubs also struggling recently as they lost their last two games.
Nonetheless, if there is one thing the Grizzlies have proven time and time again this 2021-22, it's to never count them out. They weren't supposed to be among the top dogs in the West, but here they are skipping the middle step of their development and establishing themselves as playoff and title contenders.
If the Grizzlies are actually able to contend for the top seed in the West, it could very well make Morant's case for the MVP, too!
A lot of people are talking about how the Grizzlies are only a half-game behind the Warriors for second place in the Western Conference standings. But Ja Morant said this group wants first. 🔈 pic.twitter.com/GKwOAHRT97
