The Memphis Grizzlies have now reached 10 losses in a row after back-to-back defeats against the San Antonio Spurs in a mini-playoff series-like test for the struggling franchise.
Centerpiece Marc Gasol was disappointed with the effort his team showed down the stretch, as the Grizzlies were outscored 27-20 in the fourth quarter and just didn't have enough stops in them to grind out a win.
Article Continues Below“That's what bothers me most, how we laid down at the end of the game, especially on the defensive end,” said Gasol, according to Peter Edminston of The Commercial Appeal. “Defensively, you've got no excuse not to give the effort that builds that trust we always talked about. That, to me, is inexcusable because we worked too damn hard during the game to be in the game.”
The Grizzlies were just flat out unable to produce any offense in the entire game, posting quarter scores of 18, 20, 21, and 20 — numbers that won't get through the vast majority of NBA teams.
The Spurs didn't shoot the lights out, at a mere 44.3 percent for the game, but the Grizzlies were futile in their attempts to connect from the field, shooting only 40.4 percent from the floor and a faint 5-of-15 (33 percent) from deep.
Things don't get any easier for the 7-14 Grizzlies, slated to face the streaking Cleveland Cavaliers on the road tonight, and the collection of the Minnesota Timberwolves, New York Knicks, Toronto Raptors, and Oklahoma City Thunder next week.
