The Milwaukee Bucks set an NBA record for three-pointers made in a single game on Tuesday, as they collectively sank 29 triples in a 144-97 rout over the Miami Heat.
Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer is a detailed-oriented hoops junkie, yet he was unaware that his team was setting a new mark — during or after the game. Frankly, he didn't sound particularly impressed by his team's accomplishment, either.
“No, I don’t even know what record you’re talking about,” Budenholzer said when asked about the record post-game, via Joe Vardon of The Athletic. “ … It’s the sport. You need your team to make more and their team to make less of them. So, it was a good night. You’ve got to acknowledge it and some nights the basketball gods are with you a little bit.”
Overall, the Bucks shot a blistering 56.9 percent (29-of-51) from downtown. Every active player, with the exception of Giannis Antetokounmpo, made at least one three in the road win. Giannis' younger brother, reserve wing Thanasis Antetokounmpo, sunk the first three-pointer of his three-year NBA career.
Jrue Holiday led the way with six threes on 10 tries, while Donte DiVincenzo made five of six from deep.
Last season, the Bucks led the NBA in three-pointers made per game (17.5). However, as Vardon notes, being on the right end of a three-point fiesta is atypical for Coach Bud.
Article Continues Below“On Sunday, the Bucks coughed up 16 3s in a 20-point loss to the Knicks (more on that, shortly). Oh, and five seasons ago, when Budenholzer was coaching Atlanta, his Hawks were on the wrong end of the NBA record for 3s in a playoff game, when the Cavaliers lit them up for 25.”
Of course, as three-point numbers rapidly rise in the modern NBA, the Bucks record may not stand for long.
Milwaukee moved to 2-2 after the win.
Budenholzer will hope his team's hand stays hot on Wednesday, as the same two teams will face off again at AmericanAirlines Arena.
