Minnesota Timberwolves legend Kevin Garnett doesn't want to see Alex Rodriguez — one of the franchise's new co-owners — relocate the T-Wolves to Seattle.
However, in a candid interview with Sopan Deb of The New York Times, Garnett said he believes that's exactly what's going to happen.
Here's the full interaction re: Garnett's lack of communication with A-Rod and what he thinks are the motives of the new ownership group:
Article Continues BelowCan you tell me a bit about your relationship with Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez, the new ownership group of the Minnesota Timberwolves?
I haven’t had any conversations with them. I haven’t spoken to A-Rod personally.
Do you have any interest in being part of the new ownership group, whether in basketball operations or as a minority owner or in some way being part of the franchise?
I think that opportunity has passed. I actually think I’ve been hearing whispers that A-Rod is actually going to take the Timberwolves to Seattle. So we’ll see. I don’t know.
Would you be upset if that happened? [The Timberwolves didn’t respond to a request for comment.]
No one wants to see the Wolves leave Minneapolis, but you know, it’s business. I would never want the Timberwolves to leave Minneapolis and Minnesota. I think that team means a lot to that state.
Rodriguez and Lore struck a $1.5 billion deal to buy the Timberwolves earlier this year. Rodriguez has pledged not to relocate the team to Seattle — and that promise is apparently contractually agreed upon — though it would undeniably make business sense to do so, as Garnett concedes.
In the past, Garnett expressed a desire to purchase an ownership stake in the Wolves. Last March, he shared his disappointment on Instagram after his potential group of buyers were rejected by long-time owner Glen Taylor.
Garnett speaks frankly on a variety of topics in the Times conversation (which serves as promotion for his upcoming Showtime documentary), including the NBA players' decision to play in the bubble, his non-relationship with Ray Allen, and his acting career.
