New Orleans Pelicans point guard Lonzo Ball was a desirable trade target ahead of last Thursday's trade deadline. But the Pelicans elected to retain Ball as they prepare for a late playoff push.
Ball had not said much of anything in advance of the deadline. But he broke his silence on Wednesday explaining he was ready for a variety of possible moves:
“It was definitely in my mind. I was prepared for anything. I know a lot of people were calling,” Ball told reporters on Wednesday, via ESPN's Andrew Lopez. “But ultimately, what happened was supposed to happen and I'm where I'm supposed to be at.”
The former No. 2 overall pick also stated he was pleased with the current situation in New Orleans, both from a team and individual perspective:
“I'm just comfortable here,” Ball said, via Lopez. “I also love playing with (Zion Williamson) and (Brandon Ingram). We have a lot young guys. I think we can be good in the time coming.”

That statement regarding the team's budding potential could be pivotal in terms of assessing Ball's future.
The 23-year-old will be a restricted free agent this summer after failing to reach an agreement on an extension with the Pelicans last fall. He could garner quite a strong market especially with a strong finish to the season.
However, New Orleans' decision to keep Ball through the deadline could reflect an eventual desire to keep in in RFA. That desire only figures to grow strong should Ball help the Pelicans earn a playoff spot.
Lonzo Ball’s stats have been impressive this season, as he boasts a career-best scoring average of 14.2 points per game while shooting 42.5 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from 3-point range.
