After recently signing a huge two-year, $31 million deal with the New York Knicks this summer, incoming fifth year power forward Bobby Portis is definitely not short on confidence. As one of the recruits brought in to The Big Apple this offseason, Portis recently shared how he believes he is more than ready to take on any role that he is asked to perform for his new team.
I bring energy, I love to score the basketball, I can score from all three levels. Driving the basketball, shooting the three, posting up, finding the mismatch, just being who I am,” Portis told David Yapkowitz of Basketball Insiders. “I think I’ve done a good job since I’ve been in the league of being who I am, knowing my role on the team and playing it to a tee. I think I can hone in on any role that Coach Fizdale wants me to play.”
To be fair to Portis, he did have a pretty good year last season, despite having to switch sides in the middle of the campaign. In February, the 6-foot-11 power forward was traded by the Chicago Bulls to the Washington Wizards, and the former 22nd overall pick did not appear to miss a beat. As a matter of fact, he even upped his numbers with the Wizards, rounding out the year with 14.3 points (on 44.0 percent shooting), 8.6 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.4 blocks, while also connecting on 1.7 three-pointers per ballgame on a highly-efficient 40.3-percent clip.
His outstanding campaign resulted in a hefty payout in the summer, as Portis now enters the new season as one of the more prominent players on a rather makeshift Knicks side.
