While the season is already over for the New York Knicks, fans were still hoping they can end the campaign on a good note. While they did see big games from Obi Toppin and Immanuel Quickley on Friday, it is not without bad news after RJ Barrett suffered an injury.

Barrett picked up a sprained right knee late in the second quarter of their game against the Washington Wizards. As he drove to the left lane to dish out an assist to Jericho Sims, he got double-teamed and had contact as he fell down and stayed on the floor for 10 seconds. He initially shrugged it off, but it didn't take long for him to ask to be subbed out.

He headed to the locker room with less than two minutes remaining at halftime, and during the break, the Knicks ruled him out with a knee sprain.

As Marc Berman of the New York Post reported, the injury might have just ended RJ Barrett's season. They have one game left against the Toronto Raptors on Sunday, and it looking unlikely that he'll play given the nature of the injury. Additionally, it won't make sense for the Knicks to play the youngster given that it's a lost season already.

Barrett is a key part of the Knicks' future and it is worth noting that head coach Tom Thibodeau had some high praises for him before their Friday showdown with the Wizards.

“We always talk about being a team of leaders,” Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said, per The Post. “How does he set the tone for that? The challenge is not only to bring the best out of yourself but the best out of the team.

“What you see a lot of times a player that’s going to command two on the ball, don’t fight that pressure with pressure, trying to split it and score over it. Get off it so we can get high-quality shots from that. Most young guys go through a period they have to learn. RJ has grown in all areas this year. He’s had a very good year. That’s what I love about him.”

Hopefully, though, Barrett's injury is not that serious and he'll be able to return sooner rather than later. After all, it is a crucial time for him since he is set for his rookie extension.
