New York Knicks budding star Kristaps Porzingis has been the team's best player by far through the first few weeks of the 2017-18 NBA season. After an inauspicious summer, the Knicks have made it clear that Porzingis will be the focal point of their franchise moving forward.

Meanwhile, it seems some New Yorkers are ready to also make him the focal point of their local government.  According to Benjy Sarlin of NBC News, Porzingis was among the candidates listed in the city's recent mayoral vote:

Despite his shunning on draft day, the third-year man from Latvia has taken the ‘Big Apple' by storm. Kristaps Porzingis has averaged 30.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game thus far.

Many figured the Knicks were going to be a disaster from start to finish this year. However, they have gotten off to a solid 5-4 start to the 2017-18 NBA season, which is good enough for sixth in the Eastern Conference. There is no doubt that ‘The Unicorn' has been the main reason behind it.

Unfortunately, his early-season heroics were not enough to give him the edge in New York's mayoral race as the incumbent Bill de Blasio won the vote. Regardless, the Knicks are in good hands with Kristaps Porzingis set to be their leading man for years to come.
