When Luka Doncic's reported frustration with the Dallas Mavericks' front office surfaced, there were some talks he should move to the New York Knicks. Even former NBA player and current ESPN analyst Jay Williams said that it is “feasible.”

However, according to latest rumors, it is not Doncic that the Knicks are interested in this free agency. If there is someone to monitor, it is Mavs point guard Jalen Brunson.

Per Marc Berman of the New York Post, Brunson has plenty of connection to the Knicks–from President Leon Rose being the agent of his father Rick Brunson to head coach Tom Thibodeau having his dad in all of his prior coaching staffs. Moreover, Rose is said to believe that the Villanova product is a “legitimate starting point guard.”

Now it’s up to Dallas’ new coach, Jason Kidd, to decide whether Brunson, a second-round pick out of Villanova, is the guy to build around and lock in long term. The Mavericks will exercise his team option for next season and can offer him an extension. If Kidd lowballs him, Brunson will decline and the Mavericks will be forced to trade him or risk losing Brunson to 2022 free agency. The Knicks have Brunson on their radar.

Jalen Brunson is undoubtedly a key piece for the Mavs, but it remains to be seen how new coach Jason Kidd views him and if he plans to give the youngster a key role in his system. The 24-year-old guard has shown flashes of brilliance, but he has been largely inconsistent under Rick Carlisle.

However, there is a good reason why the Knicks could be interested in him. He has undoubtedly improved in his third year in the league, averaging 12.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3. assists while only committing 1.2 turnovers in 2020-21.

For what it's worth, the Knicks have several trade and free agency targets, including Lonzo Ball and Kendrick Nunn. With that said, they may not end up making a move for Brunson at all. However, the situation remains something to monitor given Brunson's increasing role for the Mavs.
