The New York Knicks were a massive disappointment in the playoffs despite such a brilliant season. They were officially eliminated on Wednesday night in five games by the Atlanta Hawks in front of the Madison Square Garden faithful, but considering where this team was even just a season ago, there is a lot to be positive about.
The Knicks finished as the fourth seed in the NBA in 2020/21, much in part to a breakout campaign from Julius Randle. While he didn't show up in the playoffs, the first-time All-Star was the sole reason New York became a contender in the first place.
Bringing in Tom Thibodeau was the best move this team could've made. One of the best coaches in the game instantly turned the Knicks into a top-five defense, ranking third in the league. In comparison, NY couldn't play defense to save their lives a year ago, finishing 23rd in the Association in that category. While their offensive rating wasn't a lot better this season, more players stepped up. On top of all of their success, literally, no one could've predicted the Knicks finishing towards the top of the Eastern Conference.
Aside from Randle who averaged 24.1 points, six assists, and 10.2 boards, second-year guard RJ Barrett took significant strides compared to his rookie campaign. His numbers shot up in every category, especially points. The Canadian averaged 17.6 per night and served as the Knicks' second-best offensive threat to Randle. Barrett was also a key part of the team's efficiency from downtown. In year one, he shot just 32% from long range. This season? 40%.
The Knicks, as a whole, finished third in the Association with a 39.2% clip. That was almost 10% better than 2019/20. The entire rotation was capable of making it rain, which gave Thibodeau numerous threats that could shoot it.
Right now, the Knicks have a pretty solid core intact as well for the future. Randle, Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, and Mitchell Robinson will be around for the long haul. Obi Toppin will likely stay put as well but there is always the possibility that New York makes some blockbuster moves to strengthen the roster, which they should. Quickley showed glimpses of brilliance for the Knicks and has the potential to turn into a very good player.

Derrick Rose really stepped up for the squad since arriving from Detroit, but he isn't getting any younger. The Knicks need to pinpoint a true PG in free agency, with numerous options expected to be on the market this summer. Dennis Schroder, Lonzo Ball, and Kyle Lowry are just a few names to keep in mind.
While the lack of playoff experience showed its ugly head over the last couple of weeks, the dog days for the Knicks are behind them. New York won just 21 games last year and then went 41-31 this season. That's a huge turnaround and something to be proud of.
Sure, there are some pieces that are needed and there's no doubt the Knicks will address them. But with a brilliant coach at the helm along with the likes of Randle and Barrett leading the way, there is a lot of reason to be positive about the future at MSG.
Bowing out in the first round of the postseason is heartbreaking. But, they're heading in the right direction. Knicks fans, don't worry. Better times are ahead.
