There were some questions after the 2017-18 NBA season surrounding Aaron Gordon and what precisely the Orlando Magic were going to do with him. He is a restricted free agent which means the Magic have the chance to match any offer he receives in free agency. They can also try to work out a deal with him before free agency, so other teams don't get a chance to offer any contracts.
It appears the Magic are eager to get a deal done, and president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman talked to the Orlando Sentinel about the plans.
Article Continues BelowWe’ve worked hard to establish a relationship with Aaron and learn him and he learn us. And, obviously, a big part of this is just having relationships with his representatives and just having discussions with him as we move forward and start to see if there’s a middle ground that we can reach and strike a deal. And we’re hopeful that we can do that.
Weltman also doesn't feel like he needs to recruit Gordon, because they have made it clear how much he means to the organization.
Aaron knows how we feel about him from just the relationship that we’ve had with him since being here. And, obviously, part of that will be rolled into the negotiation. When you say “recruiting,” that kind of implies learning the city, learning the organization, trying to show him who you are. Obviously, that’s already in place. So I don’t think so.
Coming out of college Aaron Gordon was known as a dunker and had to work on the rest of the game. Since coming to the Magic he has worked at becoming a better all-around player, and he looks like a guy that the Magic can build around if they can strike a deal this offseason.
