Philadelphia 76ers head coach Brett Brown has a plan in place for this upcoming 2019-20 NBA season, now boasting a retooled roster with plenty of smart acquisitions.
The coach noted the team intends to play with an identity:
“We will end up playing smash-mouth offense and bully-ball defense,” said Brown at Wednesday's presser, according to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The Sixers have plenty of physical specimens to take it hard to the rack, players like Ben Simmons, Tobias Harris, and Joel Embiid who can finish at the basket. Yet the addition of Al Horford could make the Sixers able to bully any big man that hopes to score in the paint.
Article Continues BelowBy that very admission, comes the challenge of defending teams that boast perimeter-oriented big men, as Embiid and Horford sacrifice some mobility when defending the paint so tenaciously. While stopping bulldozers like Andre Drummond and Rudy Gobert, they could leave themselves susceptible to more well-rounded centers like Karl-Anthony Towns, Nikola Jokic, and Marc Gasol, who are able to shoot and make threes comfortably.
Every team will have a weakness and that one is not such a bad one to have, considering that most of the centers that possess that skill set reside in the Western Conference.
Developing an identity early, however, can prove to be a major stepping stone for a team hoping to snatch the Eastern Conference crown and peak at the right time as the Sixers go on yet another quest to finally reach the NBA Finals.
