Social media has its positives and its negatives, but Sixers guard J.J. Redick ditched all of his social media profiles in an attempt to break free from the grip it can have on a person, even calling it a “dark place.”

“It's not even conscious,” Redick told Tom Haberstroh of Bleacher Report. “I hate to admit it, but anytime you're at a stoplight and your phone is within reach? You pick it up. It's become instinctual. Even if you put the phone down and walk out of the room, you're always aware of where it is. It's become an extension of you. That's fucking scary.”

Most of us can relate to this sentiment from Redick. How often do you instinctually grab your phone to pull up Twitter or Instagram and aimlessly peruse your timeline? We all do it to a certain extent. Redick just decided to rip off the band-aid and delete his social media profiles altogether.

That has to be a liberating feeling. No more meaningless notifications that pull you into mindlessly cruising through Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter. It's hard to feel like you aren't missing out on something, but Redick seems at peace with his decision.

The Sixers are interesting because they have players on both sides of the social media spectrum. Contrasting with Redick's decision to ditch social media, his teammates, Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, are social media stars. Embiid and Simmons are must-follows on all social media channels and each time they post, like, or comment on something, it makes headlines.
