The Philadelphia 76ers lost a heartbreaker in overtime to the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday. The deciding play came on a bullish drive from Blake Griffin, resulting in an and-1 and a one-point lead for the Pistons. But Griffin's game-winning drive should never have happened.
The NBA's Last Two Minute Report for the game concludes that Griffin traveled and committed an offensive foul on the game-winning play. Had this play been called differently, a Sixers victory would have been all the more likely.
The NBA’s Last 2 Minute Report says that on the #Pistons’ game winning play vs. the #Sixers, Blake Griffin should’ve been whistled for a travel before the dribble as well as an offensive foul for clearing out Robert Covington. Instead, he got the and-1, and Detroit won by 1. pic.twitter.com/c5lEsH0oNp

This was a tough loss for Philly to swallow, and this revelation just adds insult to injury. The back-and-forth affair looked like it would come down to the final few seconds, which it did. Unfortunately, a couple missed calls loom large in this game.

That being said, the Sixers were the beneficiaries of some dubious calls as well. Andre Drummond was ejected for making contact with Joel Embiid late in the game. But after further examination of the play, it's clear that Embiid baited Drummond into the contact and then dramatically flopped to the ground to get the call. The league has even issued a warning to Embiid about flopping.
The two-minute reports the NBA issues are a good tool for officials to use, and they give fans something to consider when there are questionable calls in the waning moments of a game.
But of course, there were a number of calls that went Philly's way that won't show up in the two-minute report — like the Drummond ejection.
