The Phoenix Suns are reportedly interested in acquiring Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Chris Paul. As it turns out, Paul is interested in heading to Phoenix.

Brian Windhorst of ESPN was one of the ones to break the story regarding the Suns engaging the Thunder in trade talks. Windhorst said Wednesday a deal may be contingent on Paul and the Suns working things out themselves:

“It’s really the Suns and Chris Paul who have to work it out with each other, Windhorst said, via Kurt Helin of Pro Basketball Talk. “The Thunder have given Chris Paul permission to talk to the Suns. It normally would be tampering, but they’ve given him permission…

“I think it’s over 50-50… I think there’s momentum towards it…

“I think Chris Paul is interested in being a Phoenix Sun, and that is not a minor statement.”

This is a potentially massive development.

The Thunder have shown a willingness to work with stars in pursuing trades. They did so when they traded Russell Westbrook to acquire Paul last summer, in addition to the deal that sent Paul George to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Phoenix appears to be in the driver's seat when it comes to landing Paul, which makes some sense given they are expected to have a projected $20 million in cap space and also have young stars like Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton.

The question will be what kind of assets Sam Presti and the Thunder desire. It is possible the Suns have to give up the budding Kelly Oubre Jr., with a draft pick or two also potentially in play. Ricky Rubio is another trade option.

Still, as Windhorst noted, there appears to be serious momentum when it comes to Phoenix's pursuit of CP3.
