Anthony Davis of the New Orleans Pelicans recently requested a trade and preferred a team who are legitimate championship contenders. However, locking in a trade is not as easy as it seems. Looking at all of the NBA teams' financial papers, it looks like the Sacramento Kings are the only team who can trade for the star forward without sending back a hefty amount of salary.
As reported by Danny Leroux of The Athletic, the Kings are the only team who have cap space. This means that any other team who wishes to engage in a trade has to send back some salary to satisfy the rules. Sans the Kings, for interested teams in getting Davis, they need to prepare at least $20.25 million in salary — whether it's a simple two-team trade or a three-team deal.

In this case, that means a team can only take back a maximum of 125 percent of the salary it sends away in a trade, plus $100,000. As such, a deal just for Davis requires sending out at least $20.25 million in salary whether it goes to New Orleans, a third team or some combination of the two, and the salaries of any additional players the team receiving Davis gets in the trade push up that $20.25 million.”
There is no question about Davis' capabilities. He's definitely worth the $20.25 million worth of salary that a team other than the Kings are required to send back to seal the trade. The question now is which team is willing to arrange a deal for him? And which team does Davis want?
