The Sacramento Kings have waived point guard Frank Mason III, the team announced on Thursday.
The Kansas product averaged 6.8 points on 39.2% from the floor, 30% from deep and 77.3% from the foul line, along with 1.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists in 15.8 minutes per game during his past two seasons.
Mason was used as the third-string point man, behind starter De'Aaron Fox and backup Yogi Ferrell, only making two starts during his 90 games in the NBA.
The 25-year-old had an Oct. 15 guaranteed date for his $1.6 million contract, according to ESPN Insider Bobby Marks. Waiving him now will give the 5-foot-11 guard the chance to find a new home now instead of having only a week left before the start of the season.

If not, the floor general could opt to sign a deal in the G League in hopes to attract interest down the line or look for options overseas, where plenty of former NBA players have found a home.
Mason is a capable penetrator with plenty of moves around the basket, despite his small stature at the position, which has made his living a lot tougher when challenging bigger, stronger players.
He's a better shooter than advertised, but he had a relatively rough go in 2018-19 buried in Dave Joerger's bench, which didn't allow for much consistency in his minutes or in his role with the team.
Only two years ago, Mason was coming off his senior year at Kansas, averaging 20.9 points and 5.2 assists per game, drafted with the 34th pick in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Kings after being named the consensus National Player of the Year.
