Despite seeing his team get swept by the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Finals, and already turning 37-years-old this July, San Antonio Spurs forward Pau Gasol still plans to opt in for the second year of his contract with his team.
The veteran Spanish international made his intentions known in a piece made by with Tom Osborn of the San Antonio Express-News. He also added that he was not looking forward to become a free agent once again as he wants to continue his playing career with the Spurs.
“My intention is to continue here, and to be here as long as I can.”
“To be honest, I don’t look that far ahead, but I would see that that as very unlikely. I would love to continue here as long as a possible.”
Gasol chose the Spurs among the teams who showed interest in him last summer, and accepted a lower pay than what he could've had with others. He signed a relatively small deal for two-years, $16 million, as he felt his best chance of winning another championship is with the Silver and Black.
This can be considered as good news for the San Antonio faithful, as their team is expected to bounce back from the disappointing end to their season. With Gasol playing for them again, along with a healthy Kawhi Leonard and Tony Parker next year, it will give them plenty of reasons to once again believe that they can win it all.
