The San Antonio Spurs on Thursday night made the surprising signing of veteran forward Rudy Gay to a two-year, $17.2 million deal.
Although this brings aboard another proven scorer, there are still lingering questions that lie concerning his health after suffering a completely torn Achilles back in January. However, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN is reporting that Gay should be ready before the start of next season.
Article Continues BelowGay, who turns 31 in August, is actively rehabilitating the Achilles tear, and there's an expectation that he should be ready to return sometime in the fall. Gay opted out of $14 million in the final year of his contract with the Kings, simply ready to move on from the organization.
The 30-year-old brings another dynamic to the Spurs of a proven scorer behind Kawhi Leonard and alongside LaMarcus Aldridge. San Antonio struggled in that area a bit in the Western Conference Finals against the Golden State Warriors, especially after Leonard went down with an ankle injury.
The fact that he will be ready to go near 0f the start of the season will allow him to weave his way into the mix under head coach Gregg Popovich‘s system. It will also give more than enough time for him to find a steady role in the offense alongside Leonard and Aldridge.
The Spurs ability to add Gay on their full mid-level exception could prove to be a huge benefit as it still leaves them with the financial flexibility to re-sign former All-Star big man Pau Gasol to a new deal this offseason.
