San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, who is simultaneously a national treasure and an NBA legend, had some sage words after his team lost to the Washington Wizards in a high-scoring affair in the nation’s capital.

“All-in-all, if you score 132 points, you should probably have a pretty good chance to win a game. The bad news is that if you give up 138, you're probably not gonna. I'm just a really smart guy — yeah I'm figuring that's logical, right?” Pop told Candace Buckner of the Washington Post.

Indeed, the Spurs have long thrived on a strong defense in order to win games — dating back to the days of the Admiral and Tim Duncan. However, with recent rules changes and an increase in pace, NBA games routinely finish in the 120s, 130s and even the 140s.

Coach Pop is right to be a tad peeved, as his team produced a sterling 122.4 points per 100 possessions as a team yet they gave up a shocking 131.4 points per 100 possessions to their opposition — which explains Pop’s consternation.

The Wizards’ effective field goal percentage in the game was an incredible 68.5, which is in the 99th percentile.

Popovich certainly is a “really smart guy” when it comes to basketball, as he is currently the third most-winningest coach in NBA history after passing Jerry Sloan last season. Pop trails only Don Nelson and Lenny Wilkens, who accrued 1335 and 1332 wins respectively in their storied careers.

Sadly, Pop won’t add to this total via the Wizards game, but at least he still has his trademark sense of humor.
