The Vanderbilt Commodores have been known more for their work on the hardwood than for their prowess in college football. That's why many college football fans likely fell out of their seats when they heard what Commodores head coach Clark Lea said on Tuesday. During SEC Media Days, Lea made this shockingly bold declaration about Vanderbilt football. Here's what he said, per ESPN.
“We know in time Vanderbilt football will be the best program in the country,” he said.
Clark Lea said that “in time, Vanderbilt football will be the best program in the country.” Wow. Talk about being bold.
The Commodores haven't exactly been setting the gridiron on fire lately, having went 2-10 in the 2021 season. In fact, it's been a rough recent stretch, as the Commodores have posted eight straight losing seasons.
It's that level of play that led the university to bring in Clark Lea, a former defensive coordinator for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, as their new head coach ahead of the 2021 campaign.
Lea certainly isn't all bluster either. The Commodores coach knows it will take a lot of work to get to where he wants to go. He spoke about valuing development of the people they have, then saying this.
“When you're smart in design and disciplined in your approach, you win out in time. That's Vanderbilt football.”
That's definitely a long-term view of things by the Commodores coach. How does he plan to improve in 2022? Lea said he wants to get better at “managing the tactical aspects of games.”
Clark Lea certainly seems committed to getting the Vanderbilt Commodores back on the map. Maybe they should be a program to watch.
