Every sport has their legendary figure. The “GOAT” if you will. MLB has Babe Ruth, NBA has Michael Jordan, NFL has Tom Brady, golf has Tiger Woods, and the list goes on for other sports. However, there is one athlete who's importance to not just sports but the world rises above the rest. And today, April 15th, is a day where his sport honors him. Jackie Robinson is the most impactful athlete the world has ever seen. And today is MLB's Jackie Robinson Day.

In 1945, Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey began scouting the Negro Leagues for talent he could potentially sign. Rickey's desire to sign an African American ballplayer was met with scorn by many. However, Rickey knew the impact the signing would have. He also knew the player would need to be tough and able to handle insults, racist remarks, and dirty play from opponents. The talent of Jackie Robinson initially grabbed Rickey's attention. And Jackie's tough demeanor and mature personality made him the perfect candidate for the Dodgers to sign.

Jackie Robinson officially broke the color barrier in 1947 and paved the way for athletes of all different races to excel in not just baseball, but all sports. He is an inspiration. This year's Jackie Robinson Day honors the 75th anniversary of Robinson breaking the color barrier.

Brooklyn Nets superstar Kevin Durant recently discussed Robinson's impact on the world.

“His impact is still being felt today, especially here in Brooklyn, New York City, and places that he went through on his journey.”

The Dodgers still played in Brooklyn at the time of Robinson's signing, which is what he is referencing in his quote. Kevin Durant and plenty of other athletes are grateful for what Jackie Robinson did.

MLB will honor him on Jackie Robinson Day by having every player don the now retired number 42 on their jerseys.
