New Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving missed Sunday's practice as he continues to recover from a facial fracture suffered when he took an inadvertent elbow to the face earlier in the week:

Irving was listed as day-to-day after the official diagnosis of his injury was made. Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson said he didn't think Irving would be out long, but they're obviously going to be cautious with this injury. The star point guard is expected to wear a mask whenever he returns to the practice floor.

The 27-year-old is eager to get things going with his new team. Irving went through a rocky 2018-19 season with the Boston Celtics, a campaign he recently admitted was derailed by the death of his grandfather. He said his grandfather's passing changed his outlook on plenty of things and helped drive him to head home to Brooklyn.

The Nets should be a playoff team in the Eastern Conference with Irving on board. Brooklyn likely isn't a championship contender just yet as Kevin Durant recovers from his torn Achilles, but there's still plenty of other talent on the roster.

Irving will be the leader this season, and the hope is that will go smoother than it did in Boston. First, he'll need to get back on the court.
