Rumors first emerged in ResetEra forums suggesting that new games for the series will be coming soon. They pointed to a Thunderful Group annual report that suggested four games will be released between 2022 and 2023. Image & Form has since merged with Thunderful Group but still operates as the same development team for the project. We’re not sure yet if they will be producing sequels or new titles, but we’re pretty sure that a SteamWorld Dig 3 might be one of them.
Image & Form gained prominence for their Dig and Heist series on Nintendo platforms. The last SteamWorld game released by Thunderful Group was SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamesh back in 2019 on the Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows, and Google Stadia. The game received very positive reviews. Meanwhile, outside of the SteamWorld franchise, Image & Form also has a project they are currently working on. The game, titled The Gunk, will be releasing later this year exclusively on Xbox.
