Teams around the NFL have been working tirelessly to prepare for the upcoming 2022-2023 season. Thursday marked the final day of mandatory minicamp for multiple franchises, including the Washington Commanders and Houston Texans.

However, moving forward in the NFL Offseason, these two clubs are facing consequences. Both teams received punishments for violating offseason rules. The league fined Lovie Smith $50 thousand for the Texans' prohibited 1-0n-1 OL vs DL drills. Meanwhile, Ron Rivera was fined $100 thousand for excessive contact in the Commanders' practice drills. The league also took away two 2023 OTA practices.

NFL insider Dan Graziano tweeted the news Friday morning.

The league considers this point in the offseason as “Phase Three.” According to the NFL, teams can conduct ten days of OTAs throughout the four week period. They can engage in 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills, but live contact is prohibited.

The punishments are brutal for both teams. However, the consequences for the Commanders just add to their recent troubles. The franchise has been investigated throughout the offseason for workplace issues and has even more issues for their hearing scheduled for June 22.

On top of all of this, the Commanders fined assistant coach Jack Del Rio $100 thousand for recent statements. He referred to the January 6 Capitol riots as a “dust-up,” and voiced his opinion on the Black Lives Matter protests in summer of 2020.
