The murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer has caused many to share their condolences for Floyd's family and release statements on the situation. While some of the players have shared statements, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell issued his on Saturday amid the nationwide protests.
Earlier this week, Floyd was murdered by a police officer despite not having committed an egregious crime. As a result, Floyd's tragic death ignited the discussion of police brutality and racism in our country.
Of course, these are the issues that Colin Kaepernick attempted to convey to the NFL and to people around the world. Instead of helping him carry out his message, the NFL and its owners shunned him from the league. Therefore, Goodell issuing a statement on systemic issues likely isn't going to be welcomed by many.
Still, the commissioner of the NFL should realize now that the issues that Kaepernick kneeled for are plaguing the country. At the same time, he understands the NFL and its players have a platform that can aid in creating change. Additionally, players from the NFL and other prominent sports figures are speaking on the injustices in today's society.
Altogether, we've seen the likes of Joe Burrow, Derek Carr and Brian Flores voice their frustration on Floyd's death. Of course, other prominent sports figures have let their voice be heard as well.
In addition, all of them have called for people to begin listening to those negatively affected by today's society. It appears that Goodell — despite his previous stance on Kaepernick — is reiterating that changes need to be made.
