Why Giants Could Cover the Spread

The New York Giants have had a rough 2021 season, going 4-11 and placing last in the NFC East. They have lost four straight games and will travel to Chicago to take on a Bears team that is very even in talent. They will return to Soldier Field for the first time since Saquon Barkley tore his ACL just over 15 months ago.

For more insight on the Giants-Bears matchup in Week 17, listen below:

Barkley is not producing as well as he can because the Giants offense has been subpar all season. They rank 30th in the NFL in points per game (16.5) and yards per game (303.5). They have been looking for answers on offense but have not gotten enough consistent production out of quarterback Daniel Jones.

Last week, the Giants faced the Philadelphia Eagles with rookie Jake Fromm starting at quarterback. They lost 34-10 and Fromm went 6-17 for 25 yards before Mike Glennon took over. Both quarterbacks totaled just 108 yards through the air.

Defensively, the Giants are better on this side of the ball. They give up 24.3 points and 363.9 yards per game to opponents. They have the 9th best red zone defense in the league and have a 4.95% sack percentage. In their last eight games in January, the Giants are 6-2 against the spread.

Why Bears Could Cover the Spread

The Chicago Bears will look to build from their 25-24 win on the road in Seattle last week. The Bears successfully converted a two-point conversion to steal the win from the Seahawks. Chicago has a 5-10 record and ranks 3rd in the NFC North. They are eliminated from playoff contention and will be evaluating Justin Fields play moving forward. He seems to be the quarterback of the future in Chicago. Offensively, the Bears average 17.7 points and 308 yards per game. This ranks them 26th in the NFL in yards per game. Running back David Montgomery has been a bright spot for the Bears offense this season. Chicago ranks 8th in rush yards per game (122.7).

Playing at Soldier Field is never easy for any opponent, especially due to the weather conditions. Given the low point total, it seems as though it will be a low-scoring, defensive battle. This favors Chicago, as their defense has been playing really well over the past month. Against the pass, Chicago leads the league in opponent passes per game (29.6) and sack percentage (8.64%). They should have their way with the Giants offense, regardless of who is at quarterback.

Final Giants-Bears Prediction & Pick

This is a very evenly-matched game between two teams in the bottom half of the NFC. Both teams will most likely be playing backups in order to evaluate the talent on each roster. The Bears are 1-5 against the spread in their last six games overall. However, the Giants conceded 31 points including 17 unanswered points to the Eagles last week in the second half. New York looked like a very defeated team last week and I am not sure they will be able to produce enough offense in Chicago. Take the Bears with the points as the defense should be able to hold the Giants to under 10 points.

Final Giants-Bears Prediction & Pick: Chicago Bears -6 (-110)
