Why The Jaguars Could Win

The Jacksonville Jaguars just might be the worst team in the NFL. They have really been struggling this season. Through their first 14 games they only have 2 wins. It seems like they are playing for draft picks at this point, and it is working. The Jags are coming off a 14 point loss to the Texans. Their last win came 7 games ago against the Buffalo Bills. Jacksonville won that one by 3, with a final score of 9-6. Their only other win came over the Dolphins, also by 3, with a final score of 23-20. Jacksonville has struggled in every aspect of their game this season, but at least there is no where to go but up. They are facing a nearly equal opponent this week in the Jets. So while the Jags may be among the worst in the league, so is their competition this week.

Leading the way for the Jaguars this season has been rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence. The hype around Trevor Lawrence coming into this season was tremendous. He was supposed to be the saving grace for Jacksonville, however it quickly became evident that a team needs more than just a quarterback to win games. Lawrence has been okay, if not underwhelming this season. He has thrown for nearly 3,000 yards, 9 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. Rookie quarterbacks always struggle, but many fans thought that Lawrence would be the exception. He has proven that he is not. However, he has built a decent first season with which he can continue to improve upon. If he has a solid game on Sunday, that could be enough to take down the Jets.

On the other side of the ball, the Jaguars defense ranks 20th in the league in yards allowed. They allow over 350 yards of offense to opposing teams. Opposing rushers rush for 113 yards against this team and opposing quarterbacks throw for 239 yards. While the defense hasn't been great, they have been in the middle of the pack, yards-wise, in the league. Where they struggle is in limiting scoring. The Jags allow nearly 27 points per game. The Jacksonville defense will need to kick things up a notch if they want to win on Sunday.

Why The Jets Could Win

To no one's surprise, the New York Jets have been having a horrible season. Through their first 14 games they only have 3 wins. They have been struggling to get anything going and there have been very few bright spots for fans to cling to. They are coming off a 7 point loss to the Miami Dolphins, and will look to get just their fourth win of the season against a very bad Jaguars team. The Jets are rare favorites heading into this match. This game could end up being a dumpster fire, something so bad that you just don't want to look away. New York could plausibly walk away victorious, but they will need to limit mistakes.

The leader of this Jets team is rookie quarterback Zach Wilson. Wilson has had his struggles this season. While he doesn't have many teammates that he can lean on, Wilson has only thrown touchdowns in three games this season. On the season he has thrown for 1,900 yards, 6 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He has failed to keep his team in games, and is one reason the Jets remain uncompetitive. While Wilson can't be given all the blame, he certainly can carry some of it. If the Jets want to win on Sunday they need their quarterback to find the end zone.

One area that is certainly not Wilson's fault is the abysmal Jets defense. New York ranks dead last in the league in total yards allowed. They allow over 391 yards of offense to opposing teams. On top of that, they allow nearly 31 points per game. Wilson can't be blamed for not keeping his team in games when he is being asked to score over 30 points a game just to have a shot at winning. The Jets defense really needs to step things up on Sunday if they want to have any chance at winning.

Final Jaguars-Jets Prediction & Pick

This game will likely showcase some horrible football. While there will likely be many mistakes, this game could easily be entertaining and highly competitive. When two of the worst teams in any sport face off a lot of pride is on the line. No one wants to be the absolute worse and the loser of this game might be just that. This could go either way but pick the Jaguars, the Jets defense is extremely vulnerable and even Trevor Lawrence should be able to capitalize on that. Pick Jacksonville to win and cover.

FINAL JAGUARS-JETS PICK: Jacksonville Jaguars +1.5 (-110)
