Two weeks ago at the NFL trade deadline, the San Francisco 49ers walked away as one of the big winners of the day when they acquired edge rusher Chase Young from the Washington Commanders for a 3rd-round pick. At first glance, this did seem like an awfully low price for a 24-year-old former #1 overall draft pick who, despite injuries, has been very productive when he's managed to stay on the field. But as is always the case, there was a good reason for a development such as this one.

“Washington initially was seeking second- and fifth-round draft picks in return for Young,” according to sources of ESPN Insider Adam Schefter. “But when teams expressed concerns about Young's medicals, the Commanders dropped the price to the 49ers, who wound up sending a compensatory third-round pick to Washington for the former Ohio State star.”

In acquiring Chase Young, the 49ers have only added to the embarrassment of riches they already have up front. Young joins former Ohio State teammate Nick Bosa, as well as Javon Hargrave, Arik Armstead, Clelin Ferrell, Javon Kinlaw and Drake Jackson, a mishmash of pass rushers that is at least partially responsible for the Niners defense leading the league in interceptions so far this season.

As Schefter notes in the story, Chase Young is on an expiring contract and will be an unrestricted free agent next year. It's likely that John Lynch and the 49ers front office will do all they can to re-sign Young, but if they don't, they'll be owed a compensatory pick in return.
