Zach Wilson has taken his last snap with the New York Jets, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.
Wilson, who was placed on injured reserve Saturday, remains in concussion protocol and will miss his third straight game when the Jets close out the 2023 season in Foxborough against the New England Patriots in Week 18.
“My understanding is this offseason they’re expected to seek to trade Zach Wilson, moving on from a (draft) pick that simply did not work out well,” Rapoport said Sunday.
“If you say ‘How could the Jets trade him?’, I would say this, ‘Every quarterback gets traded.’ I do not expect them to cut him.”

Wilson was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Handed the starting job without any veteran competition, Wilson struggled badly as a rookie. It didn’t get better in 2022, when he was benched multiple times. Nor this season, when he came off the bench four plays into Week 1 after Aaron Rodgers ruptured his Achilles.
With Rodgers as his mentor, the 24-year-old clearly improved in certain areas this season. But Wilson still struggled mightily to make big plays and get the Jets in the end zone. He was benched once and then sustained a concussion in Week 15. The Jets offense is one of the worst in the NFL this season and New York will miss the playoffs for the 13th consecutive year.
Earlier this week, Coach Robert Saleh said, “We'll see” when asked if Wilson will return next season.
The Jets would take a big hit against the salary cap if they simply cut Wilson. So, they will do their best to snag a low-round draft pick to complete their divorce from Wilson.
Rodgers nearly made a miracle comeback from the Achilles surgery to play late this season. He is expected to return for the 2024 season at 40 years old to be New York’s starting QB.
