The NFL trade deadline is right around the corner and there could be an unlikely name involved in trade talks. According to ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio, people in league circles believe the New Orleans Saints could seek a trade involving Michael Thomas.
Thomas hasn't suited up for the Saints since Week 1 in large part due to a high ankle sprain he suffered versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Besides his ankle ailment, Thomas was also suspended for New Orleans' Monday night contest against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 5.
The All-Pro wideout was suspended due to an altercation with teammates during practice. As a result of the incident, the Saints held him out for a game and fined him the same amount as his game check.
And during the team's bye week in Week 6, Thomas apparently sustained a hamstring injury that will sideline him in Week 7. With all of the issues Thomas has had to begin the season, the Saints could be willing to part ways with him for the right price.
A year ago, Thomas signed a five-year, $96.5 million extension with the Saints, making him one of the league's highest-paid wide receivers. If the team were to trade him, they'd take on a $20 million cap charge, which would give them even more cap issues — especially with Drew Brees counting $22.65 million against the cap next season.
Given the team's dire cap situation, a trade involving Thomas is highly unlikely. But similar to most players, New Orleans would probably be willing to listen to offers from other teams — at the least.
