Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson still doesn’t have a long-term deal in place as the regular season creeps closer. Although, he is “encouraged” that the contract talks between his camp and the Cardinals are continuing.
Johnson admits that the broken wrist he suffered in the last year's opening game which saw him miss the rest of the season hasn’t helped him in negotiations.

I was hoping my production from my second year and what I did my first year would help out, but the NFL is what have you done for me lately, so hopefully I can prove it once the season starts.”
Johnson is in the final year of his rookie deal and will make $1.88 million in base salary in 2018. Prior to missing basically all of 2017, he was an All-Pro as he led the league with 2,118 yards from scrimmage and 20 total touchdowns in 2016.
A report in June indicated that a deal was expected to get done between the two sides by the start of the regular season. But while there’s still time to do so, the clock is ticking on both parties to get it done.
Still, the fact that the two sides continue to talk — and have a reasonable reference point in the market-setting Todd Gurley deal — is an encouraging sign that they could still bang out a deal by the start of the season after all.
